Cancun World Cup / Season wrap up 10th November 2007

2007 is over!! well my ITU World cup season that is. I had my final race in the weekend at the World Cup in Cancun, Mexico. I went in to the race with a limited build up due to being sick with the flu for two weeks. But I still had a small chance to move up the world rankings for the year's end.

The race was always going to be hard for me with the disrupted build up. As soon as the gun went and I hit the water I knew I was in trouble and possibly in for a long day!. I got out of the water just off the back of the first group, normally I would and could push hard to the front but my body was saying not today buddy... I hate not finishing any race but made the decision to pull out early on in the bike. It was a real shame to get sick at the end of the year. I had some great form after my win in Rhodes and I just wanted to race and race well. I always say things happen for a reason, so I guess my body had just had enough for this year.

I'm now having 3 weeks off training and will tidy up my base here in Germany. I'll then head back to New Zealand for the summer on the 19th of November. As I said in my last email it has been a great season. All the goals I had set myself at the start of the season have been ticked off. Now I have laid the foundation I can build on what maybe the most important 10 months of my life. Just making the team is sometimes one of the hardest parts of getting to the Olympic Games. Trust me I know this first hand from Athens. The bonus for me back then was that I was there the whole way mostly with Bevan then in the later stages the rest of the team. I may have only been a reserve ( and a commentator ) but I watched and took note of things that I know will serve me well in the next 10 months heading towards Beijing.

As I sit inside now and look out of the window, I can see it's dark already ( its only 3.30pm ) and I hear there is a possibility of snow......YAY! I can't get to NZ fast enough. No I really love it here in Saarbrucken, it's great for training and there is always a really good group of athletes to spend time with. But now is the time to fly south. I only hope that the New Zealand summer will be one to remember, not forget!!.

Take care everyone, and see you when I get back.

Cheers,

Kris
