Tragic news - the passing of Peter Holmes 7th December 2009
This is an amazing shock and will be felt throughout the triathlon community.
On behalf of all of the ITU athletes, It has been with great sadness that I hear about the passing of Peter Holmes in Canada. Peter was an amazing asset for all of the athletes this year during the ITU International series. His enthusiasm was infectious during his time with the ITU, and I'm sure every athlete out there will agree with me. It's hard to believe so soon after the passing of Emilio we are dealt this double tragic blow.
We are a very big family throughout the world, and I hope everyone can take a moment and offer there support to Peter's family during this time. He will never be forgotten within the ITU "because we are not like the others".
regards,
Kris - International Triathlon Union Athlete Representative

From Brian Mahoney - ITU Media and TV Director;
Dear all.
It is with absolute shock and sadness that we have to inform you of the tragic death of our colleague and close friend Peter Holmes.
Peter passed away yesterday in an accident while hiking on a local mountain.
It is ironic in Peter’s line of work as Communications Manager, that words will never be able to describe what he meant to us all and the effect he had on all of those around him. While Peter worked with us for the last nine months, it seems like he was a part of our family since the beginning. Peter was a shining light of happiness and energy and truly touched all our lives in a deep way. We will always treasure his wit and humour. As those of us who knew him well can testify, he was a social butterfly who brought happiness to so many of our lives and those of whom he met on his international travels. Peter loved his job as much as those around him loved him. In only a short period of time he made close and treasured friendships with athletes, event organisers and media alike.
The triathlon world and all our lives are immeasurably poorer without Peter in it.
We will keep you informed of further arrangements once we are advised, however this may take some time as his family needs to travel to Canada to make the arrangements. I hope we can all treasure Peter’s memory and commemorate it in a way fitting for such a wonderful person. I hope we can all support each other in these tough times.
This has been a dark week for triathlon.
